Bicornuate Uterus and Delivery

This study has a chart (Table 1) that states 25% of bicornuate pregnancies result in preterm deliveries, but it's a very small sample size of only 56, so perhaps not statistically significant.

This study also stated 25% result in preterm delivery, again with a small sample size, this time only 26. However, they also break down the weeks in which delivery occurred into two groups. Of the 14 deliveries, 3 occurred between 22-28 weeks and 11 occurred between 28-37 weeks. 46.4% of deliveries made it to term. The remaining pregnancies were "aborted," spontaneity not listed.

This study has a compilation of multiple other studies (Table VII). Overall, out of 627 pregnancies 23% delivered early, and 40.6% made it to term. If you look at only the delivery numbers (exclude abortions) 36% delivered early and 63% made it to term. Playing with the numbers also reveals a 13.2% still birth rate among the deliveries.

Diapering

We're going to use Bum Genius 4.0 (Available from cottonbabies 24 for $385)

  • Going with Bum Genius because they seem to be one of the top rated/reviewed brands, and they hold up well in the long run
  • Going with snaps because they hold up better than velcro/hook and loop closures, and they are harder for older babies to remove. Plus they just look better than the wide strap of velcro across the waist
  • Going with a stuffable diaper because they dry quicker, and I tend to get behind on laundry and need things clean and dry in a hurry
  • 4.0 also stays drier against baby's skin than the elemental.

Suggested care instructions from Kacie at With Love

  • She has 24, but says it'd be nice to have about 6 more for when she's busy
  • You'll want to wash them every other day
  • A spatula can also be used to scrape solids into the toilet, she then just throws it in the wash with the diapers
  • Use a fleece liner if you're going to use any diaper cream, since creams can mess up the diaper's absorbency. Wash the liners with the wipes, not with the diapers.

For the newborn phase, there's the option of going with newborn Bum Genius (12 for about$180). Pampers Swaddlers run about 27 cents each.

If one size diapers don't really start to fit until around 12 pounds or 3 months, that's about 1000 diaper changes. This would be about $270 for disposable diapers, so buying a newborn stash of cloth could be worth it, especially since we're going to have more babies down the line.
